Portraits & Characters
Nick created an authentic exchange, capturing the attitudes of those around him with lighting that anticipates film noir. His people are fully present, without pretense. He depicts a young man gazing intently, his fingers taut on his worn leather jacket. A dog sits with watchful authority, and a child wonders at reflections glancing off the water’s surface

Nick’s sister, Mary Yudluvitz, was 11 when their mother died in 1916. Nick shows his abiding affection for her in this image, taken while he attended St. John’s Technical Collegiate in Winnipeg’s North End, when she was already married to Bernard “Bere” Ginsburg.
